The Migration Advisory Committee or MAC has recently reviewed the minimum income requirement for UK partner and spouse visas. The review was commissioned by the Home Secretary to assess the current £29,000 threshold and previous government’s plans to increase it further to £38,700. The MAC has recommended against further increases, suggesting a range of £23,000 to £25,000 instead. Although the UK government is under no strict obligation to implement the MAC’s recommendations, it is highly unlikely that the minimum income requirement for family visas will rise to £38,700 as set out by the previous government. It is instead more likely that the income threshold will be slightly lowered to a figure around the mid-£20,000 mark, or potentially remain at £29,000 per annum. The MAC further suggested changes and amendments to the current family policy for the government to consider, which includes greater flexibility in how the financial requirement may be met.
